Post Procedure Management

POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTION GUIDE
Suggested considerations for patient management following cryoablation of the prostate

SWELLING & MANAGEMENT:
  1. Patient may have same swelling and bruising of the penis and scrotum.
  2. Patients can apply ice packs to the scrotum and behind the scrotum, 2 hours at a time with 1/2-hour breaks for 5-7 days. Some patients may require a longer time period. Wearing a jock strap helps most patients.

NORMAL ACTIVITY:
  1. Patients may get up to do minimal daily routines, minimizing activity for 5-7 days will greatly help decrease the swelling. Some patients may require a longer time period.

MEDICATIONS:

1-2 Weeks Post Cryoablation:

  • Medication for bladder spasms
  • Alpha Blockers
  • Antibiotiics until catheter removed
  • Stool softener
  • Pain and anti-inflammatory medications

3 Months Post Cryoablation:
PSA Test

1 Year Post Cryoablation:
TRUS Biopsy (if indicated)

Note: There may not be a need for TRUS Biopsy routinely if an acceptable PSA nadir is acheived and the PSA remains stable. This is at the physician's discretion. A post procedure biopsy is suggested when there is a biochemical (PSA) failure.

NORMAL FINDINGS AFTER CRYOABLATION:
Patients may experience a number of findings after the cryoablation:
  1. Blood in the urine. Urine should clear in approximately 24 hours after the procedure.
  2. Some scrotal and penile swelling. This may occur about 2-3 days after the cryoablation and is caused by tissue swelling that temporarily blocks the lymph drainage. This is painless and resolves in less than one week. Lying down for short periods of time during the day will improve the swelling.
  3. Small amounts of bloody discharge from the end of the penis. This can occur for up to 6 weeks after the procedure.
  4. Some numbness in the head of the penis, occasionally, when a large amount of freezing is required.  After a number of months the sensation returns.
